Esther Williams swam her way into the hearts of millions as the All-American star of some of the most exuberant and innovative movies of all time. Now she tells readers what it was really like to work at MGM, the premier studio during Hollywood's Golden Age. In THE MILLION DOLLAR MERMAID: An Autobiography (Simon & Schuster; September 14, 1999).

With warmth, humor, and uncompromising candor, Williams discusses her unique career, her often-troubled love life, and many other legends of the studio era, including Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Cary Grant, Johnny Weissrnuller, Lana Turner, Mickey Rooney, Greer Garson, Gene Kelly, Stanley Donen, Rex Harrison, Victor Mature, Jeff Chandler, Ava Gardner, Van Johnson, and Louis B Mayer.

She speaks of her long and sometimes difficult marriage to her third husband, Fernando Lamas, who demanded that she stop being Esther Williams the movie star, and the financial difficulties she experienced after her second husband managed to lose $10 million of her money. But she also writes of the wonderful new life she has created for herself in recent years; her role as the “godmother” of the Olympic sport of synchronized swimming, her sponsorship of a successful swimsuit line, her reconciliation with her three children, and her happy marriage to her fourth husband, Edward Bell...more

    • Why Esther Williams is my favorite Movie Star!

    AND THE WINNER IS -

    7/28/1999 Kerry Gervais Age 16
I was introduced to the famous Esther Williams by my mother, who told me about her beautiful swimming in each movie. I am a dedicated Synchronized swimmer, and I immediately became glued to the television when I started watching my first Esther William's movie, "Neptune's Daughter."
Esther Williams is my favorite movie star because she is my inspiration. She inspires me to present myself better, and push myself harder at every swimming practice. I've improved by wanting to make a show like she did in every film. Esther is not only my favorite from her swimming, but she makes a statement about every character that she plays. Not help-less, not controlled, but a woman in business that has brains, and has feelings. She acts with a combination of style, grace, and intelligence. Those qualities make the ideal character in her movies. I enjoy old movies, and now owning many of hers, I find that no matter what mood I'm in, I can just pop in any one, maybe "Thrill of a Romance" and be perfectly content. Esther Williams is my true inspiration, that's why she is my favorite movie star, and such an important woman to me.
